See & Do

Edinburgh need we say more; the Festival City, Cultural City, UNESCO World Heritage Site, Historical City…this is all well publicised…the team at The Hostel thought we’d put together some of our highlights throughout the year…

January… The ‘Loony Dook’. Brave the waters of the Firth of Forth, the most extreme cure for a hangover on 1 January each year.

February…Rugby season, get your tickets and experience the legendary Murrayfield roar and Edinburgh hospitality.

March… Come to Edinburgh and take in a night at the Theatre. We cater to all tastes, from rock concerts to ballet or theatre. For a sample view: https://www.eft.co.uk

April… Shopping, shopping, shopping! With Edinburgh’s Princes Street, George Street and Ocean Terminal there is an array of shops to suit all tastes and budgets!

May… Generally one of the best months of the year weather wise in Edinburgh – a month when the city emerges from the dark of winter and is in full bloom, simply stunning. Events in May include the Edinburgh Marathon, an extremely busy weekend in Edinburgh so book early to avoid disappointment!

June… Choose from the Royal Highland Show, a rural extravaganza event with something for everyone or if the outdoor life is not your thing…time for the first cultural festival of the year…this time it’s Edinburgh International Film Festival…just warming up!

July… Summer is well and truly with us and what better way to spend a day than to wander down the Water of Leith, stopping of at the National Gallery of Modern Art and the Dean Gallery. Not only are these buildings and gardens beautiful, but the exhibitions within are thought provoking and interesting. Edinburgh Castle also plays hosts to many concerts at the Castle during the month of July.

August… Yes it’s main festival season, wander the Royal Mile for some street performing, hang out in George Square for a few drinks, experience the full festival atmosphere of the Pleasance and the Spiegeltent, 2 venues not to be missed!

September… Fireworks, the festival fun all ends with the most spectacular firework show you’ll ever see.

October… We’d recommend a trip to the Edinburgh Royal Botanic Gardens, wrap up and take a leisurely stroll round the gorgeous autumnal settings.

November… Before the Christmas party season starts, check out Edinburgh’s George Street for a night out. With a glorious selection of bars and restaurants, a great party night with friends is guaranteed!

December… We hate a festival in Edinburgh!! So with only three months gone since the end of the summer season, we host the Edinburgh Winter festival. Ice-skating in St Andrews Square, mulled wine in Princes Street Gardens, giant ferris wheel rides and clubs and pubs in the height of party season…come on – join the fun! Amazing Pop Acts headline the Edinburgh Hogmanay concert in the gardens, so please visit their website for ticket information. https://www.edinburghshogmanay.org
